Doctors Without Borders
I want to be a doctor and help people in need as a member of Médecins Sans Frontières or Doctors Without Borders someday. Under the influence of my father, a doctor, I got interested in becoming a doctor when I was a child. About 5 years ago, my little sister was born. It was only a month after the Great Earthquake. When I saw her for the first time, I felt the beauty of human life. I thought about the value of life. I was filled with respect for my mother and I was amazed at her strength. At the same time, I admired the doctors and nurses who tried their best for my mother and sister in such difficult times.
Last summer was the most memorable one I've ever known to date. I had an opportunity to go to France and stay there for about a month. The experiences I had there made me eager to become a doctor. The purpose of the visit was to share with the French people my experiences of the Great East Japan Earthquake and my feelings about the Fukushima Nuclear Disaster. I stayed at home and camped around France. When we were camping, we often enjoyed splashing about in the clear rivers. It was my first time to camp in the wild and I enjoyed the freshness of nature. I met a lot of wonderful people there. I talked with a pianist who has supported the children in Chernobyl. I also enjoyed playing the piano with a girl from Belarus.
I stayed in a small village called Lautrec for two weeks. My host mother was named Agnes. During my homestay with her, she helped me a lot. She prepared wonderful croissants for me every morning. She took me to a bakery and taught me how to choose delicious breads. She always worried about me and talked to me. I couldn't speak French fluently, but she tried to understand what I said and what I felt. She was like my real mother. She is very kind to everyone.
One day I saw some boys who were talking to car drivers one after another as they stopped on the street. The boys wore dirty clothes. They were cleaning the windows of the cars to earn some money. One of them was injured. His leg was bleeding, but he didn't receive treatment. I was very sad. After I came back home, I told Agnes about it. She said that there are some people in the world who cannot receive proper medical care. I told her about my thoughts and my dream to be a doctor. I believe that all the children and all the people of the world have the right to live safely and happily. I want to do something for people regardless of their language, country or culture. She listened to me and said, “You will make your dreams come true. Believe in yourself and keep trying!”
To make my dreams come true, I have many things to do. I will have to study hard to acquire special medical knowledge. To communicate with people around the world directly, I need to brush up on my English ability. If I can also speak French fluently, it will be easier and more convenient to help people in French-speaking countries. I also should have an interest in what is happening in the world today. But I think that the most important thing in being a doctor is to have empathy for others. I learned that from Agnes last summer. My dream is to be a doctor who can not only cure people's diseases, but also empathize with patients.
