    A Funny Job

Mary got a job. She was going to work for Mr. and Mrs. Rogers. When she arrived at the house, Mr. and Mrs. Rogers were waiting for her at the door. Mrs. Rogers said, “We're going out now. Can you do the things on this list?” Mary said, “All right,” and they left.
Mary thought, “First I'll make a lemon pie. Then I'll do the things on the list. The pie will be a surprise.” After she made the pie, she looked at the list.

1. Clean the hall and put the lights out.
2. Draw the curtains when the sun comes in.
3. Dress the chicken in the refrigerator.

Mary thought for a minute after she cleaned the hall. Then she took the lights from the hall and put them out in the sun.
“Well, I can cook better than I can draw, but I'll try,” she said. She sat down and drew a picture of the curtains.
“How strange!” she thought. “I must make a dress for the chicken.” She cut a piece of yellow cloth, and made a little dress. She put it on the chicken. “You look much better now,” she said. “I'll keep you in the refrigerator.”
After a few hours, Mr. and Mrs. Rogers came back. “Did you finish your work?” asked Mrs. Rogers. “Yes,” said Mary.
They were surprised. “Why are the curtains open?” Mrs. Rogers asked. “I drew the curtains,” said Mary. “Here is the picture.” There were no lights in the hall. Mrs. Rogers got very angry. “What did you do with those lights?” Mrs. Rogers shouted. “I put them out. They're in the garden,” Mary answered.
“What about the chicken?” Mrs. Rogers asked. “I dressed it,” Mary said.
Mrs. Rogers went to the kitchen, and found the chicken in a fine dress! She almost shouted, “Get out of this house right now!” But before she could say the words, her husband put something in her mouth. It was very good, and she forgot her anger. Mrs. Rogers liked all pies, but she liked lemon pie the best.
Thanks to the lemon pie, Mary was able to keep her job.
